The project gathers more than 200 scientists from 10 Norwegian research institutions in sharing resources, competence and infrastructure to provide a cross-disciplinary scientific basis for the sustainable management of marine ecosystems and societies in the northern Barents Sea and adjacent Arctic Ocean.

The role of Akvaplan-niva in the project is the study of seafloor communities: linking new data to existing Akvaplan-niva time series, measuring processes related to carbon cycling, and investigating food-web links. Akvaplan-niva also uses its strong network of Russian research institutions to facilitate sample collection for studies of the eastern Barents Sea in the Nansen Legacy project. Finally, we helped organize and steer the Nansen Legacy Reference Group.
