Contaminants in polar ecosystems (COPOL) – a Norwegian contribution to the International Polar YearThis project is part of a multinational project initiative “Fate, uptake and effects of contaminants in the Arctic and Antarctic ecosystem,” endorsed by the Joint Committee of the International Polar Year (IPY). The overall aim of COPOL is to understand the dynamic range of man-made contaminants in marine ecosystems of Polar Regions, in order to better predict how possible future climatic change imposed alterations of the marine food webs will be reflected in levels and effects at higher trophic levels. The project is a co-operation between several institutions within the
Polar Environmental Centre, together with the Norwegian Institute for
Water Research and lead by the Norwegian Polar Institute.
Akvaplan-niva’s focus is on contaminants in arctic benthic food-webs.
