PhD Position in Applied Ecosystem Modeling

The Department of Environmental R&D, Tromsø, Norway invites applicants for PhD research fellowship in applied ecosystem modeling. The PhD research fellowship is for a total of 3 years with a possibility for extending the period for one year through a work experience program.

The PhD position is associated with the Research Centre for Arctic Exploration (ARCEx). Akvaplan-niva is a scientific partner within ARCEx. ARCEx aims at improving knowledge of petroleum resources in northern and Arctic areas. ARCEx aspires to provide essential knowledge and methodology for eco-safe exploration in the high north. The Research Centre for Arctic Exploration is led by UiT, the Arctic University of Norway, funded by the Research Council of Norway, and its strength is also represented by the significant cooperation amongst the 10 academic and 8 industry partners.

The successful candidate should have a background and interest in marine biology or ecology with a strong interest in computer science and modeling. Candidates with experience in Arctic environments will be prioritized. The successful candidate will be working on an ecosystem based impact assessment modeling system In accordance with the specific skill set of the successful candidate, he/she will contribute to the further development of this modeling system located at the University of Tromsø supercomputer facility. The candidate will have the opportunity to work within a large, interdisciplinary research team. 

The main research topics are:

• Development of new methods to simulate the temporal and spatial movements of marine organisms
• Optimization of system operations
• Evaluation and extension of system capabilities

Conditions of appointment:
The salary for a PhD candidate is NOK 420 000 before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage. 

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident,” given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of each of the announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree through the University of Tromsø. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. See

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.  The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. Women are encouraged to apply.
