Impact Assessments

Akvaplan-niva is a respected provider of impact assessments to evaluate the influences of human activity on aquatic environments. Our specialists draw upon decades of practical field-based experience to deliver high quality assessments to our clients.

Our project portfolio extends from large strategic multi-sectorial assessments to individualised and tailored assessments. Akvaplan-niva’s clients include the offshore petroleum industry, shipping companies and public authorities. Our projects include pipeline construction and operation, industrial infrastructure development, nature protection and aquaculture. We transfer the latest scientific developments into improved environmental guidelines and new assessment tools.

Securing Safe Environmental Operations - EA, EIA, ESHIA

Akvaplan-niva's marine specialists have long experience helping clients with their environmental assessment needs. Our portfolio includes the performance of Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments and Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessments. Akvaplan-niva’s specialists apply a multi-disciplinary approach to assess vulnerable resources and areas of conflicts, considering all necessary national legislation, international conventions and agreements.

We prepare strategic assessments to assess the likely effects of human activities on biological resources, habitats, and the environment providing clients with a set of environmentally acceptable alternatives. We also perform project specific impact assessments which examine in detail the social, environmental, and economic aspects of a proposed activity.

Our extensive portfolio includes impact assessments related to the opening of new areas to petroleum development activities, enforcing management regulations such as nature protection, and recommending restrictions of ongoing activities within specific areas, such as fishing, hunting, logging or tourism. We also have broad experience carrying out impact assessments for new regional infrastructure projects such as the building of roads, airports and harbours.

Developing Practical Guidelines

When unintended events occur, responders need clear and concise operational guidelines with clear and detailed instructions to help minimise impacts to the environment. Akvaplan-niva helps develop guidelines, such as an updated version of the Norwegian guideline for shoreline post-spill surveys and an extension of this guideline for application in Russian coastal areas.

Our impact assessments examine in detail the social, environmental and economic aspects of a proposed activity. Here seabirds are seen feeding in waters off the Norwegian coast. These seabird populations are key resources to be evaluated in areas of conflict. Image by Geir Morten Skeie
