Integrated coastal zone management
The coastal zone – previously dominated
by small farms, coastal fishermen and sailing ships – has since been
taken over by fish farming, fisheries, transport, industry, defence,
leisure activities and tourism; all activities having a significant
impact on the environment and often involving conflicting interests.
Aquaculture is often the most recent
stakeholder in a region, which invariably leads to collisions of
interest with existing stakeholders.
Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)
and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) represent a sound
technical approach for the development of sustainable aquaculture
management systems, and should be compulsory for all new aquaculture
developments.
Akvaplan-niva provided aquaculture and
environmental support in many ICZM projects in Norway and abroad. Our
involvement varied from delivering background environmental data and
regional aquaculture plans to training of ICZM project staff and
assistance in the design of procedures for coastal zone planning.
Akvaplan-niva
is part of the
Coastal Futures Consortium, a broad, multidisciplinary group of
companies and institutes dedicated to delivering ICZM and related
projects. The group has nearly 500 specialists with a broad base of
expertise to tackle the challenges presented by the coastal zone: Social
sciences such as law, economics and archaeology, together with natural
sciences such as biology and geology, make significant contributions
towards the understanding of life on the coast and the sustainable
development of activities in this area.
