Sea Bass and Sea Bream

Akvaplan-niva has worked with hatchery and cage production in the Mediterranean region since 1986. It has provided a wide range of services in connection with the establishment of hatcheries and on-growing farms for sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and sea bream (Sparus aurata).

Amongst our clients AMMA Ltd and Ilknak Ltd., both sea bass and sea bream farms in Turkey, which we have assisted in site-selection, the preparation of applications for permits and financing and the selection of appropriate type of cages for the sites, supervised mooring installation and provided startup management. For the hatcheries Akvaplan-niva undertook the design, specification of equipment, supervision of construction, supervision of the installation of equipment and assisted with the start-up of production.

The AMMA hatchery is in full production already. The Ilknak hatchery started in January 1998. It's design concept is based on the ability to use both recirculated and flow-through systems utilizing borehole water to reduce heating costs. One million were transferred to the cages during 1998, but target production for the hatchery is 10 million sea bass and sea bream fry. Akvaplan-niva is involved in the day to day management of these projects and provides on-site training for local staff.

Akvaplan-niva is also involved with the provision of support services for the growing aquaculture industry in Turkey by organizing and coordinating the setting up of an independent fish pathology and environmental monitoring service for existing hatcheries and cage farms in Turkey.

Recently, Akvaplan-niva undertook a full feasibility study for sea bream (Sparus aurata) production in the Sultanate of Oman. Based on this study the first aquaculture license for the commercial culture of sea bream has been granted and we are presently preparing the design, specification of equipment and construction drawings. The project will be fully integrated with hatchery, offshore cages and packaging/ processing plant. It will be one of the largest fish farms in the Arabian Gulf region.

Akvaplan-niva will supervise the technical aspects of the project including the development of culture techniques to produce local species such as Sobaiti (Acanthopagrus cuvieri) for local markets.
