Planning and managementCoastal Zone Planning and managementAkvaplan-niva provides input to coastal zone planning and coastal zone management projects. Akvaplan-niva's involvement is usually related to the marine environment and its use (including fish farming), but we can also take overall management responsibility for multidisciplinary planning and management projects. Aquaculture site selectionThe selection of a site with the optimal environment is essential for the success of any aquaculture business. We can assist in identifying suitable sites and assess their production capacity. We have a large staff of environmental, marine and freshwater biologists and all field sampling equipment needed to make comprehensive site evaluations and environmental risk assessments. Elements that usually are considered in a site assessment include sediment conditions, water quality, current speed and direction, exposure for wind and waves, industrial activities and other discharges to the environment, risk for fish disease transfer, etc. Carrying capacity of recipient watersAkvaplan-niva has a special section working with coastal monitoring and ecology. One of its main activities is to investigate the effects of aquaculture, municipal sewage and industrial discharges on marine and freshwater environments assess maximum allowable discharges and to facilitate optimal positioning of farm cages or discharge points. Modelling is an important tool in this kind of studies. Fish stock assessment and managementAkvaplan-niva has long and varied experience
with issues related to general population ecology for freshwater fish
(nutrition, growth, reproduction, parasites, migration, etc.), resource
exploitation and management, as well as cultivation of fish stocks using
traditional and new methods. A major component in these assignments has been analysing the effects of
stock manipulation on lower trophic levels in the food chain. Commercial freshwater
fishing has long traditions in Norway, and Akvaplan-niva has carried out
several fish stock assessments and developed sustainable exploitation
strategies. These exploitation strategies have also included aspects related
to organization, fish handling and processing, sales and marketing. Project examplesContact for more information
