Environmental modelling – A tool for the evaluation of environmental impactWhen planning activities that will have an impact on the environment, such as the establishment of a fish farm, a sewage outlet, or the construction of a bridge, it is important to be able to predict and assess which consequences of the impact. Model experiments can be carried out to evaluate and compare the anticipated effects and impacts of different alternatives Numerical modelling, combined with field measurements, is a good and effective tool in Environmental Impact Assessments, and for the identification of mitigating actions. Akvaplan-niva uses a broad selection of modelling tools in environmental assessments related to aquaculture. industrial and municipal effluents, infrastructure construction (bridges, breakwaters, causeway/road banks), harbour construction, dredging, etc. The models can simulate hydrodynamic conditions (such as currents, waves, and water exchange), distribution and dilution of effluents, deposition of particulate material, recipient capacity, water quality, and many other environmental impacts of activities in the coastal zone. Our Modelling tools have been selected primarily for use in fjords and coastal waters in Norway, but most of them are also applicable in other parts of the world. Development of new models, and model adaptation and refinement according to our customers varying demands, are continuous processes. Akvaplan-niva and NIVA work closely together on the use, testing and development of modelling tools. We also exchange models and personal resources. Some examples of modelling in project activities:
