Post spill evaluation and assessment

Oil spills, smaller or larger, causes varying environmental damage depending on type of oil, and what resource and habitats that are hit. Akvaplan-niva has been responsible for updating  of the national Norwegian guidelines for shoreline post spill surveys, and have expertise in documenting acute and long term effects of oil spills. A joint set of guidelines for Arctic coastal areas is being developed in cooperation with Russian partners.,

Akvaplan-niva carries out oil spill sensitivity assessments, baseline surveys, vulnerability evaluations, contingency planning and post spill assessments and monitoring worldwide.

Assessments include determining the environmental impacts of stranded oil, and recommendations of cleanup procedures and methods least likely to exacerbate the effects caused by the oil. Over longer time scales, this type of damage assessments provide basis for monitoring and recovery assessment programs.

Project examples

  • Institutional strengthening of the oil spill contingency management of the Marine Pollution Prevention Authority, Sri Lanka
  • Mapping of resources in the littoral zone with respect to oil spills at Ingøy, Finnmark County
  • Experimental studies of oil sensitivity in eggs and larvae of coastal north Norwegian fish species
  • Guidelines for post spill evaluation
  • Long term agreement with Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies (NOFO) on post spill monitoring in the Barents Sea region.
