Environmental Risk Analyses

The purpose of environmental risk analysis (ERA) is to provide decision makers with a tool that enables them to establish and maintain acceptable environmental safety levels for their operations. An ERA enables identification of how much each individual activity or component contributes to the total risk to the environment, so that risk reducing measures can be enforced.

ERA involves: identification of environmental hazards, quantitative estimation of risk for hazardous events, spatial and temporal modelling of emissions and discharges, evaluation of important ecological components with respect to sensitivity, quantification of risks for environmental damage and comparison with pre-defined acceptance criteria and identification of mitigating measures.

Akvaplan-niva perform and contribute to ERA's for all types of activities, including offshore operations (exploratory drillings, pipeline construction and operation, Ship to ship reloading operations) we also undertake risk assessment related to contaminated harbour sediments and varying discharges from industry, waste deposits and sewage outfalls.

Project examples

  • Assessment of environmental risk from contaminated sediments in Tromsø harbour
  • Snøhvit gas pipeline and field development; environmental risk assessment
  • Ship to ship reloading operations in Finnmark; Environmental risk assessment
  • Development of Acceptance criteria for operational discharges in the Arctic
  • Risk assessments and monitoring of contaminated land fill sites (e.g shipyards)
